To help keep your water fountain from the natural mineral build-up that mineral-rich water can cause, the use of distilled water or reverse osmosis water is recommended.
Putting your indoor fountain where it receives direct sunlight will encourage algae growth so place your water fountain away from direct sunlight...also to avoid fading out the color of a gemstone fountain.
Check and add water as needed every 2 to 7 days. Keep your water level high. Do not let your water fountain run dry. The pump cannot run on air and will burn out if it is not continually submerged in water. Be sure to unplug your indoor water fountain if you are going to be out of town.
To help prevent algae growth, replace all of the water once a month.
If you are using potted plants near your table top fountain to enhance its beauty, check to make sure that no leaves have fallen into the water fountain. Leaves may divert the water and cause it to splash onto your table or the floor. Also, decomposed leaves may block your pump.
Clean your indoor water fountain every 1 to 3 months. This will help prevent algae growth. Warm water, mild dish detergent, and a soft brush, such as an old toothbrush, are all that are needed.
Use of additive products such as Algae Fix or Fountec can be used to deter algae growth.
Consider using a product called Protec which helps prevent and remove white scale deposits.
NOTE: To protect your furniture from splashing or moisture that gathers on the bottom of some fountains, place the fountain on a ceramic tile or a trivet. Some people have had ¼ inch clear Plexiglas cut to place under their indoor water fountain.
